Marbled and glazed havana calf, triple fillet framing the covers, ribbed spine, mosaic morocco, smoked compartment of tomaison, compartments trimmed with gilt small irons, red edges (18th century binding).

Leather a little faded, cracked on spine. On the 1st volume, a fragment of the head-cap is missing and a split is starting on the first jaw. Three small holes at the bottom of the spine of volume 2. Corners pierced. Fresh interior, margins cut short at binding without loss of text. Title a little faded, on vol. 1, ink drop at the head of the first pages; in fine, small hole in the margin of the last 4 leaves (pp. 793-800). On vol. 2, very discreet spotting at beginning and in fine.
Second edition, first quarto after the original folio of 1583, which included a portrait on the verso of the title and an errata in fine, also from Giunti's Venetian press.
Title decorated with the Medici coat of arms. Attractive italic script, woodcut lettering, with scholarly presentation: headlines, summary tables, index. Published by Marcello Adriani, the author's son, and dedicated to Grand Duke Francesco I?? de' Medici.

Written in Italian at the request of Cosimo I, covering the years 1536-1574, this is the official prologue to the Florentine Republic and the principate of Cosimo I de' Medici, continuing the tradition of the Italian civil chronicle à la Guicciardini.
A history appreciated for its documentary rigour, rich in diplomatic correspondence, official archive sources and embassy reports, it influenced historians such as Jacques-Auguste de Thou, who praised it for its accuracy.
Giovanni Battista Adriani (Florence, 1511 or 1513 - 1579) was a sixteenth-century Italian historian, best known for his history of the city of Florence during the Italian Renaissance.
