MARQUIS (François). Du thé, ou nouveau traité sur sa culture, sa récolte, sa préparation et ses usages. An important treatise on tea, in its rare colour-illustrated version and complete with its original cover. Paris, Nepveu, Audot, F. Marquis, 1820. In-16 volume (145 x 95 mm), full dark green morocco, five-ribbed spine decorated with mosaic morocco, gilt head. 20th century binding. Frontispiece, 124 pp, 9 plates, illustrated cover. Some foxing. Covers washed, spine lined. First edition of this very interesting treatise by François Marquis, tea merchant to the Count of Artois, whose chocolate factory, confectionery and tea and coffee trading business was founded in Paris, Passage des Panoramas, in 1818. This edition appeared in 2 formats, one in-8 (without illustrations) and the other, like ours, in-18 decorated with a frontispiece and 8 plates, 6 of which were double copper-engraved, printed in colour and enhanced with a brush. An untrimmed copy, complete with the extremely rare illustrated cover, decorated on each cover with a woodcut depicting various Chinese objects. Very good condition.
