An anonymous 19th-century manuscript devoted to an explanation of the rules, constitutions and customs of the nuns of Notre-Dame de Charité, founded by the Venerable Father Jean Eudes (1601-1680), revised almost a century later at the general assembly of the monastery in Caen in 1734. According to the preface, the work had a dual purpose: to unify the rules and to instruct the novices... A very interesting work on the evolution of the rules of this religious institution, which formed the basis of the community and spiritual life of the nuns.
Saint John Eudes (1601-1680) was a central figure in the French spiritual renewal of the 17th century and gave his name to the cult of the Sacred Heart: Eudism. An Oratorian priest and tireless missionary, he is best known as the founder of the Congregation of Jesus and Mary (the Eudists) and the Institutes of the Sisters of Our Lady of Charity... Notre-Dame du Réfuge is one of the first female foundations of John Eudes. It was designed to help "repentant girls", i.e. women in moral and social distress, often former prostitutes, whom the Church and society of the time were seeking to reintegrate through a Christian and protected life.
