Description
[Typescript]. PRIVAT (Raoul). The Bronze Sword. Historical novel.
Touching typescript from 1942 of an unpublished novel.
Typescript in-4 (280x220mm), half midnight blue percaline, smooth spine.
[3ff.], 94pp. and [2ff.]; enclosed are a family photograph, a photographic portrait of the author and 13ff. of the newspaper "La Patrie Suisse" containing the pre-originals of chapters II to XIX. The typescript is annotated in black pen and marked "Proof corrected by the author".
The story seems to take place on the shores of Lake Geneva, in Switzerland, where a young couple discover a mysterious bronze sword, propelling the narrative 2000 years earlier, in the same place, among the huts of a barbarian tribe...
This work has all the hallmarks of an original work of fiction, following in the footsteps of prehistoric novels and revisiting pre-Roman times, and setting what is rarely its setting in "Helvetia" - in other words, Switzerland.
The volume seems to have been a family relic for a long time, as evidenced by the moving photograph pasted on the back cover and the two handwritten notes, one directly on the typescript: "à mon cher neveu Francis / Raoul Privat" (to my dear nephew Francis / Raoul Privat); the other on the envelope containing the extract from the review: "À remettre en souvenir à Béatrice Ley" (to be given as a souvenir to Béatrice Ley).
Raoul Privat was a twentieth-century Swiss journalist and historian, author of several historical fictions and participant in the First World War).
Provenance: Ley family, Asnières sur Seine.
