De rebus privatis, literaturâ, œconomia, &c. Cum tabulâ capitum, & indicibus necessariis The first systematic treatise on the history of Christian Ethiopia, illustrated with remarkable copper-engraved plates. Frankfurt: Zunner, 1681. Volume in-folio of (325 x 215 mm). Bound in ivory vellum à la Bradel, spine decorated with a handwritten title vignette (slightly later binding). 336 pp, 11 plates. Spine faded, slight marks on leather. Interior fresh, light foxing. Small cracks to the folds of the plates without missing. First edition illustrated with plates of rare quality, often after Roos and engraved by J. P. Aubrey, including a large map, folding plates of natural history, two of genealogy and one of the beheading of three Capuchin monks by order of the "King of the Habessines". (WordCat indicates 10 plates). Job Ludolf, a German scholar and orientalist, published this treatise based on local sources in 1681. Thanks to his direct work with the Ethiopian monk Gregorius, he was the first European to gain reliable knowledge of the Gueze language, Amharic and the history of the Christian kingdom of Ethiopia. A pleasant copy of this fundamental milestone for all subsequent research on the Horn of Africa.
