LA FONTAINE (Jean de). Contes et nouvelles en vers. An exceptional copy of the "Fermiers-Généraux" edition in a remarkable binding by Hardy. Amsterdam, s.n. [Barbou], 1762. 2 volumes in 2 volumes in-8, red morocco, boards framed with a rich gilt decoration composed of foliate scrolls, stylised flowers and rocaille motifs with gilt spandrels, blue morocco spine covers. Fully decorated ribbed spine, marbled and gilt edges. Binding signed Hardy. XIV, 268 pp, 1 p. (table), 8 pp (notice to the binder); VIII, 306 pp, 16 pp, 80 engraved plates. An exceptional copy with good margins of this edition illustrated by Eisen at the expense of the Fermiers-Généraux, among the most beautiful illustrations of the 18th century. Eisen's masterpiece, La Fontaine's saucy verses are illustrated with 80 engraved figures by Aliamet, Baquoy, Choffard, Delafosse, Flipart, Lemire, Leveu, de Longueil and Ouvrier. The illustrations also include a frontispiece portrait of the author by Ficquet after Hyacinthe Rigault in the first volume and a portrait of the illustrator by Ficquet after Vispré in the second, as well as 4 vignettes and 53 culs-de-lampe by Choffard with his portrait in a medallion. A fine copy of the first edition, as attested by the nudity of the figures of the "Cas de conscience", the "Diable de Papefiguière", the "Lunettes", "Le Bat" and "Le Rossignol", which were covered for the second edition (Cohen 306).
