MÉRIMÉE (Prosper) and MORIN (Edmond). Chronicle of the reign of Charles IX. Illustrated with 31 compositions drawn and etched by Edmond Morin. A very fine copy of this uncommon edition with 31 etchings by Edmond Morin, printed for M. Davioud and enriched with 16 original drawings by the artist, 15 plates of essays and a L.A.S. from Prosper Mérimée, in a splendid Renaissance style binding signed Weckesser et ses fils. Paris, Les Amis du Livre (Georges Chamerot), 1876. 2 volumes in 1 large in-8 volume (180x270 mm), wine lees morocco, important gilt and cold decoration in Renaissance style, ribbed spine decorated in the same style, decorated headpieces and end-papers, gilt edges, inner gilt and cold fillets with fleurons at the corners, marbled paper lining and end-papers, covers and spine preserved, half morocco flap folder edged with gold fillet, edged slipcase (Weckesser et ses fils). XV and 422 pages, 31 compositions in black by Edmond Morin, drawn and etched, including 2 frontispieces, 1 portrait of the author at the head of the preface, 27 chapter headings and 1 cul-de-lampe. Very slight rubbing to headpieces and nerves. Rare edition of this historical novel by Prosper Mérimée, recounting the St Bartholomew's Day massacres and the Wars of Religion through the eyes of a young Protestant nobleman. It is illustrated with 31 etchings by Edmond MORIN (1824-1882), including two frontispieces, a portrait of the author at the head of the preface, 27 chapter headings and a cul-de-lampe. Limited edition of 115 copies on wove paper, this one N°10, printed for M. Davioud. Copy enriched with : - 16 original drawings by Edmond Morin (approx. 10 x 9 cm each) - 15 test plates - a L.A.S. "Pr. Mérimée", s.l.n.d. [circa 1839] 1 p. in-8: "Madame, you are writing to show me your beautiful pink paper and your bird. I will have this precious autograph bound with the volume you have promised me. In the meantime, if there isn't too much fighting in your street on Sunday, your ham will have to behave. I'll keep a tooth for him...". Ex-libris with the initials G.B. on the flyleaf. Remarkable binding executed around 1910 in the Brussels workshop of Weckesser.
