Description
[COMBE, William]. The Wars of Wellington, a narrative poem in fifteen cantos [...] by Dr. Syntax.
London, W. T. Gilling, 1821.
In-4, fawn calf, spine ribbed and gilt-lettered, with burgundy title-piece, black lettering and date at foot, boards decorated with cold crosses and gilt framed garlands, headpieces and sides decorated with gilt fillets.
In English, VI (title, introduction), 175 pp. 6 hors-texte etchings.
Minor damage to boards, one scratch to second board, sides somewhat rubbed. Some scattered foxing.
Second edition of this poem in five cantos illustrated with six beautiful etchings by William Heath coloured by Stadler.
Armorial bookplate of C. Robert Bignold on the flyleaf.
Complete with the 6 colour engravings. This verse narrative, illuminated by prose notes and illustrated with finely engraved battle scenes, relates the Duke of Wellington's campaigns in the context of the Napoleonic Wars. Although commonly attributed to William Combe (1742-1823), a borrowing of his pseudonym 'Dr. Syntax' by another author is often suggested.
