With a relation of Guiana by Walter Raleigh & the Voyage of Narborough to the South Sea by the Strait of Magellan. Translated from the English. Collection of accounts of voyages and explorations of the seventeenth century, covering the West Indies, Florida, Guiana, Central and South America and unknown southern lands. Amsterdam, Fréderic Bernard, 1722. Three Volumes in-12 (160x98mm), half calf with corners, spine ribbed and decorated with two parts and small gilt boxes. Bound at the end of the 18th century. 332pp, 2ff.n.c., 13 pl. ; 302pp, 2ff.n.c. 5 pl. ; 278pp. 2ff.n.c.. Leather faded, rubbed, two headpieces faded, small splits at first jaws of volumes 2 and 3, corners a little dulled. Titles browned, many passages underlined. Very rare first edition. The beautiful illustrations include 11 geographical maps, nautical charts & plans, as well as 7 views representing the coasts of South America, Peru, Brazil, Guyana, the cities of Lima, Callao, Arica, Mexico, etc. Generally regarded as apocryphal, the first part of this work relates the adventures of Francisco Coreal (1648? - 1708?), presented as a Spanish sailor born in Carthage who is said to have travelled through the West Indies, Central America and the north coast of South America. His adventures, whether real or imaginary, fascinated 18th-century readers. Volumes two and three contain the Relation de la Guiane, by Sir Walter Raleigh and Captain Keymis; the Relation en forme de journal de la découverte des Isles Palaos; the Journal du voyage du Capitaine Narbrough à la mer du Sud; the Voyage aux terres australes by A. Jansen Tasman; the Lettre du Père Nyel sur la Mission des Moxes, peuples de l'Amérique méridionale; a Spanish Relation de la Mission des Moxes. Provenance: "Sophie Potocka" with handwritten ex-libirs on the titles. Countess Sophie Potocka (1760-1822) was famous in her day for her beauty and adventurous life.
