A rare copy enriched with 18 original proofs by Louis Jou (including 9 washings, 8 sketches and a charcoal sketch), in an elegant Jansenist morocco binding. Paris, Éditions de la maison française, 1948. In-4 (240x280 mm), brown jansenist morocco, cold-framed ribbed spine, title and author's name gilt on wine morocco, gilt head on witnesses, covers and spine preserved. 258 pages, 45 wood-engraved compositions by Louis Jou, including 1 frontispiece, 1 title-frontispiece and 18 hors-texte in bistre monochrome, and 25 vignettes in banderols, lettrines or culs-de-lampe. Slight scratches to boards and light rubbing to corners. Beautiful edition illustrated with 45 compositions by the Spanish painter and engraver Louis Jou (1881-1968), the fifth publication in the collection "Le Florilège des chefs-d'œuvre français", produced on behalf of French and European Publications in New York. Limited edition of 800 copies and a few reserved copies on Corvol pur chiffon, this being one of the copies reserved for the Friends of the Florilège. A precious copy enriched with 9 original washes (studies for the hors-texte), 8 original pencil or pen sketches (including a study plate for 4 initials), an original pen sketch, enhanced with watercolour, for the title-frontispiece, and an original charcoal sketch.
