Description
[MANUSCRIT by a young woman aged 16]. "Collection complète des oeuvres de Madame de D. G. âgée de seize ans". Collection of four comedies by a young woman playwright during the Revolution. Circa 1795. In-4 (245x195mm). Revolutionary binding, in havana half calf, smooth spine decorated with green morocco and compartmentalized gilt decoration. 12 pp.b/w ; 41 pp ; 3 pp.b/w. 39 pp. ; 5 pp.b.c. 48 pp. ; 2 pp.b.c. 36pp. Head joint a little damaged, boards rubbed, corners dulled. Fresh inside. Handwritten inscriptions and notes on endpapers, one dated 1793. Beautiful manuscript written by a young woman, dedicated to her best friend Julie. Composed of four comedies: "La Peureuse ou le revenant", "Les Visites importunées", "L'Orgueilleuse corrigée" and "Les Soupçons fondés". Very neat work, written in black, red and green pen. The titles are framed with floral motifs, and all the pages are also framed with red and green fillets. Fine quality laid paper, very white. Several notebooks and manuscript collections written by women during the Revolution are known. Often composed of poetry to be read in a private circle, they opened up a space for expression that was both authorised and strategic, allowing women at the time to exercise their intellectual inventiveness. Rarely did they include plays.
