Description
LAMI (Eugène). Castle life.
Paris, Gihaut frères, sd. [1832].
In-4 oblong (250x360mm), half dark green long-grained morocco with corners, marbled title-piece glued to the centre of the first plate, 5 ribbed spine, fuchsia marbled paper end-papers, lithographed cover preserved (pastiche binding).
Marginal tears restored to the Japanese paper on plates 5, 11, 18 and 20; only plate 5 has affected the engraving.
The 20 lithographs in this collection (plus the black one on the cover) are all watercoloured in colour, numbered and captioned. They feature scenes of high society, with peasants, neighbours, Englishmen and squires in a variety of settings, from the playroom to the farm barn. The costumes and expressions are remarkable, as is the choice of colours. Hunting scenes too. A very fine set.
Eugène Lami (1800-1890) was a French painter and watercolourist best known for his elegant scenes of 19th-century aristocratic and military life. He was a pupil of Horace Vernet and Antoine-Jean Gros.
