Description
GILL (Eric). Song of Solomon.
Extremely rare copy on parchment (N°H) of this admirable French typographical edition of the Song of Songs, decorated with the running title in gold and 24 compositions drawn and wood-engraved by Eric Gill.
Paris, Cranach Presse, Éditions de Cluny, April-May 1931.
Narrow in-4 (135x235 mm), red morocco, smooth spine adorned with gilt title in full, cold framing on the boards, guilloche-covered edges and covers, marbled slipcase.

Minor crease marks to first few leaves.
An exceptional copy on parchment of this carefully typographed edition of the Song of Songs, also known as the Song (or Chant) of Solomon, a veritable eulogy of sensuality in the form of a series of poems and love songs alternating between a woman and a man. It is illustrated with a gold running title and 24 magnificent compositions by the famous English character designer Eric Gill (1882-1940), finely engraved and printed in black (7 full-page, 3 large in-text, 14 ornate lettering). Limited edition of 158 copies, this being one of the first 8 on parchment (No. H).
The text, based on the translation by Le Maistre de Sacy, was laid out and arranged by Count Kessler, a German collector and patron of the arts who founded the Cranach Presse in Weimar in 1913. The typeface was engraved specially for his presses, based on that used by Nicolas Jenson in Venice in 1470.
A fine and rare copy in excellent condition.
