Description
[MARINE - GUÉROULT DU PAS (Pierre-Jacob), signed DUPAS]. Suite of six seascapes. Remarkable suite of marines from the "Grand Siècle", engraved by an engineer to the King, offering a precise typology of navigation under Louis XIV. Paris, chez Pierre Giffart, rue Saint-Jacques, 1708. Oblong in-8 suite (leaves approx. 140 x 214 mm; copperplates approx. 75 x 155 mm). Bradel paper-covered boards in plum half cloth with corners, spine decorated with a green leather patch with the author, title and gilt filleting. Bound at the end of the 19th century. 6 plates. Percaline a little faded. Small tear at the edge of the first two plates. First edition of this rare suite of 6 etched plates signed lower left J.G. Dupas, captioned and numbered (1-6). The first bears the date and address in the lower margin: "1708. Se vend à Paris Chez P. Giffart Ruë St Jacques à l'Image Ste Therefe. Avec privilège du Roy". The suite is complete and presents a variety of ships (vessels of the line, galleys, cargo ships) captured in port settings or at sea: 1. View of a seaport and a ship underway. 2. Ships anchored in a harbour... 3. Ships at sea 4. Ships in the Cape with low sails 5. View of a battle and a ship 6. View of a storm. Pierre-Jacob Guéroult du Pas (1654-1740) was a Ponts et Chaussées engineer, a draughtsman for the Navy in Toulon and a talented burin engraver. He stood out from his peers for the clarity of his line and his documentary rigour. Far from purely picturesque compositions, he favoured technical accuracy: his ships are depicted in specific manoeuvring situations, faithfully described by precise legends. Provenance: from the libraries of R. Roueil, with handwritten ex-dono dated 1887, and André Barrier (Paris 1870 - 1957), a great bibliophile and collector of prints, with handwritten ex-libris dated 1916. André Barrier with handwritten date "December 1916". Fine untrimmed proofs with generous margins.
