Second edition in French. It is larger than the first, published in Paris in 1672.
The astonishing illustration includes a beautiful allegorical frontispiece of the "Naked Truth" engraved by Decker and 15 copper-engraved plates, 2 of which are folding. They show corals, stones, shells, seashells, plants, fossils, a view of Mount Etna and an astonishing representation of petrified fish teeth called Glossopetres & found on the Isle of Malthe.
The work is written in the form of letters to fellow European naturalists. The author, Paolo Boccone, a Sicilian botanist and naturalist, was the official botanist of the Grand Duke of Tuscany, to whom the work is dedicated.
