Description
Very rare first edition of this important treatise by Moïse Charas (1618-1698), a complete copy with engraved frontispiece of two vipers and 3 beautiful plates on double leaves. Paris, by the author and Olivier de Varennes, 1669. Volume in-8 (188x125mm), contemporary granulated brown calf, ornate ribbed spine, red edges. 6ff.n.ch., 220pp (ch. 218 with error), 3 ff.n.ch. (Complete). Binding restored. Interior fresh, slight wetness on the first leaves. Several passages underlined or marked, small hole (worm work) from page 169, the last 25 leaves with loss of some letters, without affecting legibility. Moÿse Charas had been successively chemistry demonstrator at the King's Garden, chemist to Charles II of England, and physician in Holland and Spain, where he was arrested by the Inquisition. When he returned to France, he was admitted to the Académie des Sciences as a chemist. In this work, he presents a study on the anatomy of the viper and the source and effects of its venom. He presented experiments carried out publicly in the King's garden and proposed a formula for theriac, a famous anti-poison made from viper flesh. He was also the author of a Royal Pharmacopoeia (1676), which enjoyed worldwide success. Provenance: from the library of Perrichon, chemist and inventor of the anti-philloxera solution (Montplaisir-Lyon) with handwritten ex-libris and repeated stamps. On the title an old bookplate crossed out.
