First illustrated edition of Eugène Fromentin's literary masterpiece, decorated with 40 etched landscapes by Gustave Leheutre, in a superb Art Nouveau lined and mosaic binding by Charles Lanoë. In-8 (165x240 mm), midnight blue morocco, ribbed spine framed with cold filets extending over the boards, boards decorated with a large floral composition stamped and mosaicked in havana, green, mauve and yellow morocco, gilt fillet on the edges, brown morocco lining signed "Ch. Lanoë" in a gilt frame, brocaded silk endpapers with multicoloured floral decoration, double endpapers, gilt edges on witnesses, covers and spine preserved, lined slipcase (Charles Lanoë). 338 pages, 40 black etchings by Gustave Leheutre, including 1 frontispiece, 1 title vignette, and 38 in the text (19 headpieces and 19 culs-de-lampe). Rare and tiny brown spots on the white endpapers. Pages 201-02 and 207-08 reprinted in error and bound in fine. First illustrated edition of Eugène Fromentin's literary masterpiece, a great psychological as well as political novel, decorated with 40 landscapes drawn and etched by Gustave Leheutre (1861-1932). This is the only book illustrated by the artist. Limited edition of 117 numbered copies, this one No. 78, printed for Léon Schuck. Copy complete with the table of engravings illustrated with two etchings. Ex-libris P. Brunet on the white endpaper. Charming Art Nouveau binding by Charles Lanoë, in perfect condition.
