LECONTE DE LISLE (Charles). FREIDA (Raphaël). Barbarian poems. A splendid copy of the first work illustrated by the artist Raphaël FREIDA (1877 - 1942). Paris, A. Romagnol, Publisher, 1914. Two large volumes in-8 (290 x 206 mm). The text volume in a burgundy morocco Jansenist binding, ribbed spine, gilt titling, double filleting on the edges, seven filleting bands on the endpapers, black moiré silk flyleaves and endpapers, gilt edges on witnesses, lined slipcase (period binding). The volume of sequels in raspberry red half-maroquin with corners, spine ribbed and decorated with gilt lettering, gilt head, edged slipcase (later binding). 426 pp, 19 plates, 100 plates. One cover of the text volume rubbed. Fine art edition with remarkable illustrations by Raphaël FREIDA: 100 etchings engraved by Pennequin, including frontispiece, 18 hors-texte and 81 headpieces. Printed in an edition of 301 copies, this one on Van Gelder vellum, offered with a handwritten note signed "hommage de l'éditeur J. Romagnol". Includes a suite of 100 illustrations with remarks engraved by the artist, preserved in a separate volume. The printing was completed in 1914, but Talvart & Place (XII, 81) indicate that it was put on sale after the war in December 1918. One of the rare books illustrated by Raphaël Freida with "Oedipe Roi" by Sophocles (1922) - "Thais" by Anatole France (1924) - "Hérodias" by Flaubert (1926) and "Le jardin des supplices" by Mirbeau (1927).
