Description
ZOLA (Emile). L'Assommoir. Zola's first great popular success in a beautiful binding by Champs Stroobants. Paris, G. Charpentier, 1877. Format in-12 (190 x 125 mm). Binding signed Champs-Stroobants, executed in red half-maroquin with corners, five-ribbed spine, compartmented, boxes richly decorated with gilt small irons. Head gilt, margins untrimmed. Covers not preserved. 569 pp. Page 175 torn but not missing. First edition, copy of the edition on current paper. L'Assommoir was originally published as a serial in April 1876 in Le Bien Public. Following the scandal caused by its publication, the magazine discontinued it, and it was continued by La République des Lettres. In 1877, the novel appeared in bookshops and, thanks to its continuing success, Zola bought his villa in Médan with his royalties. In 1879, he even collaborated on a stage adaptation. A very fine copy.
