Description
GARZONI (Tommaso). The Sinagoga of the ignorant. Garzoni's last and most biting book, a satire of human ignorance as world order. In Venetia, appresso Gio. Battista Somasco, 1589. In-8 (200 × 145 mm). Half vellum with corners, smooth spine decorated with a gilt-lettered title-piece. Slight marks on the leather, corners pierced. (19th century binding). In Italian, 203 pp. Slight traces of use to the leather, corners dulled. Some scattered foxing, old handwritten bookplate crossed out on title page. First edition given in Venice, from the presses of Gio. Battista Somasco. Title decorated with a woodcut mark, text in cursive letters, woodcut headpieces and lettering. "La Sinagoga de gl'ignoranti" is a satirical work published in the same year as the author's death. In sixteen speeches, Garzoni paints a biting picture of human ignorance, analysing its forms, causes, social effects and even its "professions". Tommaso Garzoni (1549-1589) was a caustic observer of his time and the author of the famous "L'hospital des fols incurables. L'hospidale de'pazzi incurabili" (1586). Provenance: Prefetto Razzero with bookplate. A fine copy, well bound.
