Description
PACIFICIO DA CERANO (Pacificio RAMATI). Summa confessionis intitulata pacifica conscientia. An important fifteenth-century penitential manual in vulgar Italian, the "Summa pacifica" combines morality and social realities with unprecedented pragmatism. [Venetijs (Venice), Bonetum Locatellum Bergomensem presbyterum impressum, ac in impressione recognitum, 1501]. One volume in-8 (165 x 115mm). Full brown leather, smooth spine, cold-stamped decoration on spine and boards. Period binding. 200 leaves. Leather with traces of wear, epidermis and missing headpieces, with an addition to the headpiece. Bindings missing. Inscriptions and scribbles on endpapers, title, verso of title and colophon. Some passages underlined. Slight marks of handling, as well as some foxing and spotting not serious. Second post-incunabula edition, printed in Venice in 1501, after the Milanese original of 1479. Beautifully printed in Gothic script, decorated with woodcut lettering. In this copy the initials and capitals are in contemporary highlights in yellow and red. This is a manual of confession and morals written in Italian by Pacificus de Cerano, a Franciscan active in the 15th century. This work is the only complete penitential summa written in the Italian vernacular at the time. It was inspired by the works of Bartolomeo Caimi and Niccolò d'Osimo, two major Franciscans of confessional literature. Conceived as an alphabetical guide, the Summa Pacifica deals with sins and confession, as well as economic and social issues (usury, fair prices, lawful trade), reflecting the moral and practical concerns of Franciscan preachers. It thus illustrates the effort to adapt moral theology to the everyday realities of the faithful at the end of the Middle Ages, particularly in terms of trade and civic life, and foreshadows the great treatises of the 15th century. A complete copy, preserved in its original binding.
