The best edition of this ambitious Histoire de France by the historiographer Gabriel Daniel (1649-1728), decorated with a fine allegorical frontispiece, 4 hors-texte plates, numerous head vignettes and 4 folding maps. Paris, chez les Libraires Associés, 1755 (Tomes I à VIII), 1756 (Tomes XII à XVI) et 1757 (Tome XVII). 17 vol. in-4, brown calf, ribbed spine with guilloche, gilt fleurons on the entrenerfs, gilt title and tomaison on burgundy leather, double cold framing on the covers, double gold fillet on the edges, red edges. Bound in contemporary style. Approximately 500 pages per volume, 1 engraved allegorical frontispiece in volume 1, 1 folding map, 4 engraved hors-texte plates, 4 folding maps with coloured highlights in volume XVII, numerous copper-engraved vignettes at the head, lettering and end-papers. Rubbing from use, headpieces worn or missing, first plate fragile in volume 1, foxing, more present in the margins. The most complete and sought-after edition of this ambitious Histoire de France by the Jesuit father Gabriel Daniel (1649-1728), revised and greatly expanded by the historian Henri Griffet (1698-1771) with notes, critical and historical essays, the history of the reign of Louis XIII, and a diary of Louis XIV. The illustrations include a frontispiece, a folding plan of the battle of Cassilin, 4 engraved hors-texte plates, numerous copper-engraved vignettes representing seals, medals and coins from each reign, and 4 folding maps drawn up by S.
