In-8 (140x210 mm), cream vellum, smooth spine with title in black, gilt head, covers and spine preserved, untrimmed. 6 handwritten pages, 156 pages and 1 f.n.ch., several original woodcuts by Dusan Jankovic, including 1 frontispiece and several culs-de-lampe. Very slight browning on the vellum. First edition of this novel by Jean Dorsenne, pseudonym of Étienne Troufleau (1892-1945), a poet and novelist specialising in exotic and colonial literature, inspired by his many visits to Oceania and Polynesia. It is illustrated with original woodcuts by Dusan Jankovic and accompanied by a preface by Francis Carco: "I personally have a great liking for this little novel of perfect art. It has a tone, a character, a fine melancholy and such just impulses that one retains the memory of it for a long time". Limited edition of 300 numbered copies, this being the only copy on Japon impérial (N°1), including the handwritten preface by Francis Carco (6 pages in black ink, each page numbered and with certain passages highlighted in blue felt-tip pen). A fine and rare copy.
