Description
GÉRALDY (Paul) and BÉCAT (Paul-Émile). You and I. Drypoints by P.E. Bécat.
A remarkable copy in mosaic morocco by Marius Magnin, containing an original drawing in colours signed by Paul-Émile Bécat, an inked copper (inserted in the lining) and a suite with remarks on old Japon.
Paris, Les heures claires, 1947.
In-4 (190x250 mm), duck blue morocco, boards decorated with a geometrical decoration in cold, gilt and mosaic in red ochre morocco, composed of intertwined waves with gilt dots on the edges, smooth spine decorated in the same way with the title stamped in cold, gilt fillet on the edges, The same decoration is repeated on the edges of the inside covers with the bookbinder's signature in gilt, blue moiré silk lining and endpapers with a copper plate inserted in the first lining, double endpapers, gilt head on witnesses, covers and spine, edged slipcase (Marius Magnin).
151 pages, 1 frontispiece and 32 drypoints by Paul-Émile Bécat placed at the head of each poem, numerous culs-de-lampe, text presented in a double blue frame.
Spine very slightly faded, false-title tab a little fragile, minor rubbing to edges of slipcase.
Splendid edition of this collection of intimate and passionate verses, a great success of the French poet Paul Géraldy (1885-1983), decorated with very fine compositions, some of them erotic, by the French painter, engraver and draughtsman Paul-Émile Bécat (1885-1960). This is the first - and rarest - version of the illustrations by P.-E. Bécat, who illustrated the text a second time in 1958.
Limited edition of 421 copies, this being one of 32 copies on Rives (N°23), after 1 on Japon, containing an original colour drawing signed by Paul-Émile Bécat, the inked copper of the original drawing (inserted in the lining) and a suite with remarks on vieux Japon.
Admirable binding signed by the talented bookbinder Marius Magnin (1860-1953).
