Description
MORAND (Paul) and SCHMIED (François-Louis). Mediterranean Landscapes. A remarkable copy of the original edition, enriched with a double suite of illustrations on Japon paper and 2 original gouaches signed by François-Louis Schmied, in an attractive binding by Cretté, evoking a sunrise seen from the deck of a ship. Paris, F.-L. Schmied, 1933. In-4 (200x265 mm), blue morocco, on the first cover a network of shrouds and a rope ladder in cold, revealing a rising sun in lemon morocco powdered with gold with rays of golden dots on waves outlined by a set of horizontal golden fillets which continue on the spine and on the second cover, wide inner border in the same morocco set with a frame and the signature "G. Cretté, succ. de Marius Michel" in gilt, blue-green silk lining and endpapers with bronze highlights, double endpapers, gilt edges on witnesses, cover preserved, half morocco folder, edged slipcase (Georges Cretté). 119 pages, 73 compositions in the text by François-Louis Schmied, wood-engraved with the assistance of Théo Schmied, including 57 in colour. Cover very slightly faded, slight rubbing to slipcase. First edition of this vibrant tribute to Mediterranean landscapes by Paul Morand, admirably edited by François-Louis SCHMIED (1873-1941) with the friendly collaboration of Louis Barthou, J. Exbrayat, G. Gradis, L. Givaudan, Albin Michel and General Willems. Paul Morand's texts are accompanied by a splendid iconography drawn and interpreted on wood by François-Louis Schmied with the assistance of his son Théo, comprising 16 vignettes in black or monochrome, and 57 brightly coloured illustrations, perfectly capturing the ambient light of the places visited, from the Vieux Port of Marseille to Cairo, via Algiers, Syracuse, Naples, Barcelona and Saint-Tropez. Limited edition of 110 copies signed by F.L. Schmied, this one No. 55, with two suites of all the woodcuts, one in colour, the other in black, printed on Japon mince, as well as two original gouaches signed by F.-L. Schmied, and captioned by him Itaque (135 x 95 mm) and Marabout Sidi-Jo Sud Oranais (135 x 95 mm), not reproduced in the book. From the library of Félix Marcilhac, with his bookplate on the flyleaf. A precious copy, in a splendid binding signed by Georges Cretté.
