Description
Boylesve (René). Le carrosse aux deux lézards vert. Copy n°1, in a mosaic binding by Kieffer. Paris, Calmann-Lévy, 1921. In-8 square (190x180mm), 190pp, full pumpkin morocco, taupe and green morocco mosaic boards with lizards facing each other, each in a medallion framed with gold fillets, smooth spine very slightly unstained, covers and spine preserved, witnesses preserved, slipcase (René Kieffer). First edition. One of 150 copies on Hollande, the only large paper; this one n°1. Autograph signed letter from the author "to Mme Pierre Lebaudy". Elected to the Académie Française in 1918, René Boylesve was an editorial writer for the journal Monsieur ("La revue des élégances") and a fin-de-siècle writer, a friend of Gide, Régnier, Guérin, Maindron, and others. Although the title of his first book, which brought him immediate fame (Le Parfum des îles Borromées, 1898), is still the one most often cited, contemporary critics - to the taste of the Immortals - have not given René Boylesve the place his talent deserved. Lizard, masc. noun: a saurian reptile, generally small, with an elongated body covered in scales, four short, spindly legs and a long, tapering, brittle tail.
