GAUTIER (Théophile) and ROCHEGROSSE (Georges). Le Roman de la Momie. Compositions by Georges Rochegrosse etched by E. Decisy. A sumptuous copy in a contemporary binding lined and mosaiced with Egyptian decoration by Noulhac, one of the 30 first copies on Japon impérial, containing 4 states of etchings by Georges Rochegrosse and 2 separate suites of woodcuts in colour, all enriched by an original watercolour signed by Rochegrosse. Paris, F. Ferroud, 1920. In-4 (200x260 mm), brown morocco, broad Egyptian-inspired decoration on the boards consisting of a frame of gilt fillets, listels in navy blue morocco interspersed with squares of brown morocco, and a band of black morocco strewn with lotus flowers in green, brown and duck blue morocco, with a winged scarab mosaic in brown morocco in the centre of the first board, decorated in the same style, double gilt fillet on the edges, duck blue morocco lining edged with a wide brown morocco band set with a stylised frame of gilt fillets and a navy blue morocco listel interspersed with navy blue squares decorated with flowers and mosaic pastilles in green and brown morocco, signed "Noulhac Rel. 1923" on the first lining and "Mad. Noulhac Del." on the second lining, brick silk endpapers, double endpapers, gilt edges over witnesses, illustrated covers and spine preserved, lined slipcase (Noulhac, 1923). 218 pages, 21 etchings engraved by Eugène Decisy after Georges Rochegrosse (1 frontispiece, 2 figures in the text and 18 hors-texte), 56 woodcuts and watercolours stencilled (1 faux-titre, 1 title frame and 54 bands, lettering and endpapers). Nerves very slightly faded, tiny rubbing on one cut, very rare foxing in the margins, foxing on the suite in black on China paper, slight wear to the slipcase. Luxurious edition of Théophile Gautier's famous novel, decorated with original compositions by the painter and illustrator Georges Rochegrosse (1859-1938), including 21 etchings and 56 woodcuts and watercolours by Eugène Décisy. Limited edition of 1225 copies, this being one of the first 30 on Japon impérial (N°22), initialled by the publisher, containing 4 states of the etchings (in poupée colours avant la lettre with remarque on Vélin, pure etchings with remarque, avant la lettre with remarque and avec la lettre, all 3 on Japon), and 2 separate suites of the woodcuts in colour on Japon and in black on Chine. A precious copy enriched with an original watercolour in colours signed G. Rochegrosse, presenting a variant of the frontispiece. From the library of Aimé Laurent, with his bookplate on the flyleaf. Splendid period mosaic and lined binding, executed by Henri Noulhac (1866-1931) after a model by Madame Noulhac.
