Description
[ARCACHON -BIARRITZ]. Drawing book of a South-West artist - 1839 / 1842. Interesting, rare and moving sketchbook that belonged to a certain Monsieur Soyer. In-8 oblong, long-grained havana morocco, spine ribbed with gilt fillets and highlighted with gilt garlands, boxes decorated with gilt irons, framed with gilt fillets and a frieze of cold-stamped water leaves, gilt edges. 47 pages (140 x 215 mm), 29 drawings or studies, various techniques including graphite and ink. Rubbing, corners dulled. This unusual notebook, which once belonged to a certain Monsieur Soyer, contains a variety of drawings, some of them humorous, such as a donkey based on an illustration by Grandville of La Fontaine's fables, or a cat catching a mouse, but also views of the château de Pau, seashells of striking realism, and a young Basque fisherman, oar on shoulder, exclaiming: "She's waiting for me! There is also a rare and beautiful view of the Arcachon basin, more specifically of the Tindel (later Gailhard, now destroyed) hotel and baths, in graphite taken from an illustration by Comte André de Bonneval (1769-1844) in his work "Tableau Pittoresque et Agricole des Landes du Bassin d'Arcachon" (Paris, Imprimerie de Bourgogne et Martinet, 1839), which was drawn a few years later by William Bouguereau. Two other drawings are taken from this book, notably a panorama of the Atalaye (the famous Biarritz plateau) and an unfinished hunting scene. Provenance: Jh. Delpech paper shop in Bordeaux (label). A very fine notebook with a certain mastery.
