Description
CARRÉ (Léon) and MICHAUD (Gustave). Aucassin and Nicolette. A twelfth-century song-fable translated into modern French by Gustave Michaud. Illustrations by Léon Carré.
A very fine first copy on Japon impérial (N°16), containing a suite in black of the illustrations by Léon Carré and an original watercolour in colour signed by the artist, in an elegant binding signed by Émile Maylander.

In-4 (200x250 mm), bradel, blue half-maroquin with corners edged with gilt fillet, smooth spine decorated with stained glass windows and gilt fleurons, paper lining and endpapers with blue and gold speckled decoration, gilt head on witnesses, covers and spine preserved, untrimmed (E. Maylander).
Spine very slightly faded, minor rubbing in two corners.
Deluxe edition of this fable in verse and prose written by an unknown author around the beginning of the 13th century, decorated by the French painter and illustrator Léon CARRÉ (1878-1942) with 12 compositions, reproduced in colour off-text, including one in the frontispiece. Entirely calligraphed, the text is accompanied by charming ornamentation (lettering, headpieces, tailpieces) and hand-illuminated decorations by Ch. Navetto.
Limited edition of 525 numbered copies, this being one of the 25 first copies on Japon impérial (N°16), containing a suite in colour, a suite in black of the illustrations, and an original watercolour in colour signed by Léon Carré in a blue and gold frame.
A pleasant copy, perfectly established by Émile Maylander (1866-1959).
