Some foxing to the first leaves and in the margins on the suites, with very little damage to the drawings. First edition of this text entirely engraved by A. Cossard, illustrated in the first edition with 40 compositions by the painter and illustrator Luc-Olivier Merson (1846-1920), etched by Carlo Chessa, and 35 small wood-engraved culs-de-lampe. "The first edition of this fine, highly-rated publication [...] Following a dispute with Calmann-Lévy, owner of Prosper Mérimée's rights, the publisher Romagnol was obliged not to publish the actual text of La Jacquerie and to call on Léon Hennique. The work was published six years later by Blaizot, with Mérimée's text and the same compositions by Luc-Olivier Merson" (Carteret). [Carteret, Le Trésor du bibliophile, livres illustrés modernes - 1875-1945, IV, 275]. Limited edition of 500 copies, this one of 75 copies on Arches vellum, containing 4 states of all plates (N°87). Splendid binding signed by Émile Carayon (1843-1909), decorated with an expressive and colourful composition by the draughtsman and sculptor Gustave Guétant (1873-1953).
