Elegant binding by Lehaye decorated with a charming mosaic in colours on the first cover; one of the first 25 copies on Japon (N°5) enriched with an original drawing by Lehaye used for the model of the binding, accompanied by 4 states of the etchings and an original watercolour in colours signed by Pierre Brissaud.

In-4 (225x280 mm), ebony morocco, spine with 4 false rings decorated with the author's name and title in palladium, mosaic signed Lehaye inlaid in the centre of the first cover in a silver frame, depicting a snowy landscape with a cannon, a stream, trees and a village in multicoloured morocco, silver fillet on the edges, interior framed with six gilt fillets and a fillet interspersed with palladium spheres, signature "Lehaye" in the leather, lining and endpapers in chocolate moiré silk, double endpapers, gilt edges on witnesses, covers and spine preserved, slipcase lined (Lehaye).
231 pages, 14 original colour etchings engraved by Pierre Brissaud, including 1 frontispiece, 11 hors-texte and 2 headpieces.
Minor rubbing on the spines and in a corner of the second plate, slight wear to the slipcase.
Fine edition of this famous collection by Alphonse Daudet inspired by the events of the Franco-Prussian War, illustrated with 14 original coloured etchings by the painter and illustrator Pierre Brissaud (1885-1964).
Limited edition of 406 copies, this one of the first 25 on Japon à la forme (N°5) after a unique copy, containing 4 states of the etchings (first state, second state with remarks in black, state with remarks in colour, final state) and an original watercolour in colour signed by Pierre Brissaud and dated 1928 (10x15 cm), showing an infantryman resting, his hands resting on his rifle.
It also includes an original colour drawing signed by Lehaye, which served as a model for the mosaic on the binding.
