LEPAPE (Georges). Sets and costumes for L'Oiseau bleu by Maurice Maeterlinck. With a preface by Gérard d'Houville. A masterpiece of Art Deco enchantment, bound in raspberry red half-maroquin. ? Paris, Société d'Édition "Le Livre", 1927. One volume in-8 (240 × 165 mm). Raspberry red half-maroquin with corners, silent spine, gilt head, covers and spine preserved, margins untrimmed. 2 ff.n.ch., X pp., 2 ff.n.ch., 61 plates, illustrated cover. Unique edition. Edition of only 230 copies, this is one of 200 on Arches vellum (no. 219). Superb album illustrated with 61 plates stencilled and enhanced with gold and silver by J. Saudé. The first seven plates, showing the various settings, are on double page. L'Oiseau bleu (The Blue Bird), a fairytale about the quest for a bird that holds the secret of happiness, was written by Maurice Maeterlinck (1862-1949) in 1905 and first performed in 1908 at the Moscow Art Theatre. Georges Lepape designed the costumes and sets for a performance at the Théâtre Mogador in 1923. A fine copy.
