[ATLAS - SPAIN] - LOPEZ (Tomas). Atlas geografico de España, que comprehende el mapa general del reyno y los particulares de sus povincias.
Beautiful and meticulous atlas by Spanish cartographer Tomas Lopez (1731-1802) presenting the regions of the kingdom of Spain in 95 engraved maps enhanced in colour, including two of Portugal.
Madrid, s.n., 1804.
In-folio, half brown calf with corners, ribbed spine decorated with gilt fillets with burgundy title page, red edges.
In Spanish. T., 1 f.n.ch. (table), 95 engraved maps enhanced in colour, 89 of which are double-page spreads and 6 fold-outs.
Binding worn, major leather and paper tears. Significant wetness at the head at the beginning of the book, fading in the second half. Restorations to maps 25, 26, 56, 60, 62 and 65. Map 51 and C to H missing. Handwritten annotations completing the table.
Tomas Lopez was an eminent engraver and cartographer who headed the geography department set up by Charles III. He devoted his career to making up for the lack of cartography in the kingdom. Commissioned in 1795 by the Prime Minister, this atlas was completed and published by his two sons after his death, making it the most important Spanish cartographic work of its time. This rich collection bears witness to the intensity of the geographer's output.
A worn copy that nevertheless offers an excellent panorama of Spain at the end of the 18th century.
