Leather with minor spotting, ten headpieces with tears and missing fragments, in volume 2 first spine split lengthwise. Staining in atlas volume, more pronounced on 19 maps. Important enlarged Swiss edition published in 1780 by Pellet, simultaneously in 10 vol. in-8 and 4 vol. in-4. Illustrated with a portrait of the author after Cochin in volume 1 & 9 frontispieces in very fine print, only the engravings in volumes 5-6-7-8 and 10 are signed Moreau le Jeune and dated 1780. 23 folding tables appear at the end of the volumes. The rare Atlas, sold separately at the time, is complete with 50 double-page engraved maps mounted on mitre, including no. 17bis. Neatly printed on strong paper. The 4 volumes of the "Oeuvres" contain L'Histoire de Stadhoudérat (Tome1), L'Histoire du Parlement d'Angleterre (Tome2), Mémoires politiques (Tome3), Mémoires politiques (Tome4). First published in 1771 in 7 in-8 volumes, the Histoire philosophique des deux Indes was a runaway success throughout Europe and America. It was condemned to be suppressed by decision of the Council on 19 December 1779 and sentenced to fire by decision of the Parliament of Paris on 25 May 1781. An emblematic book of the Enlightenment, presented as a history of international trade, the work is above all a violent slam against European colonialism and its arrogance, slavery and the enslavement of peoples, and against the Church, which lends its support to European hypocrisy.
