Splendid Art Deco binding by Marot-Rodde, a choice case for one of the 100 first copies on Japon Impérial (N°11) of this charming collection of legends illustrated by Tsuguharu Foujita. Paris, Éditions de l'Abeille d'or (coll. "Les plus belles légendes"), 1923. In-8 (280x190 mm), black box, smooth spine with vertical gilt title, palladium fillets on covers with gilt fish and seaweed decoration, stamped and mosaicked in red, coral and green morocco, inside border in the same box set with a bold gilt fillet and signed "Marot-Rodde", gilt paper lining and endpapers, gilt head on witnesses, illustrated covers and spine preserved, half-box flap folder with bands, lined slipcase (Marot-Rodde). 85 pages, 108 colour compositions by Foujita, including 1 frontispiece, 15 hors-texte, 2 on the covers, 1 title vignette, and numerous headbands, lettrines and culs-de-lampe in various shades of colour. Minor rubbing to the spine ends, wear to the spine of the dust jacket and to the edges of the slipcase. Beautiful French edition of this collection of the most beautiful Japanese legends collected and illustrated with 108 colour compositions by the artist Tsuguharu FOUJITA, including 1 frontispiece depicting Buddha. With a preface by Claude Farrère, the book presents 13 tales whose origins range from the legendary period to the Edo period, divided into 4 parts corresponding to the 4 elements of matter. Limited edition of 2104 copies, this being one of the top 100 copies on Japon impérial (N°11). Remarkable Japanese binding by Louise Marot, known as Marot-Rodde (1870-1938), one of the most talented bookbinders of the Art Deco movement.
