MAC ORLAN (Pierre). Les Pattes en l'Air. First edition of Mac Orlan's first book, decorated with his own humorous illustrations. A unique copy, enriched in a separate large quarto volume with 84 of the book's 113 original drawings, including the superb original colour model of the cover. With the exception of the latter, all the drawings were done in Indian ink with pencil captions and are signed by the author with his monogram. Each has been mounted on blue wove paper and the whole has been bound in a modern havana half-maroquin with a slipcase. Paris, Librairie Paul Ollendorff, [1911]. Two volumes, one in-8 (242 x 164 mm), bradel pink half cloth with corners, smooth spine, gilt head, untrimmed, cover and spine preserved (Binding by Ad. Lavaux) and one quarto album (335 x 293 mm) in lavaliere half morocco, in bordered slipcase (Later binding). 127 pp, illustrated cover, 113 plates. First edition of this collection of 37 short humorous texts illustrated with 113 compositions by the author, including one in colour on the cover, one in black on the title and 111 in black in the text. Provenance: Ex-libris of Jacques Crépineau (1932-2017), director of the Théâtre de la Michodière, theatre historian and well-known and much-loved collector. A unique and exceptional copy, bringing together the first edition of Mac Orlan's very first book and a rare selection of his original drawings, evidence of a biting graphic humour and a nascent literary verve.
