[AFRICA] - GRIAULE (Marcel). Dogon masks. A monumental work presenting for the first time an exhaustive study of the ritual masks of the Dogons of Mali. Paris, Institut d'Ethnologie, Musée de l'Homme, Palais de Chaillot, place du Trocadéro, 1938. Collection Travaux et Mémoires de l'Institut d'Ethnologie - XXXIII. Volume large in-8 (270 x 210 mm). Publisher's bradel paperback in green percaline, smooth spine decorated with title in gilt lettering. VIII, 896 pp. XXXII plates. Margins a little browned. First edition of this pioneering work of ethnology applied to African arts and rituals. Devoted to the Dogon culture, this study includes an important introduction followed by the transcription of several myths and ceremonies as well as masks, accessories and associated art. It is illustrated with black and red compositions in the text and 32 plates of black photographic reproductions at the end of the volume. This copy is complete with its Dogon music vinyl on which the different steps of two Dogon dances have been reproduced.
