Splendid Art Nouveau lined and mosaic binding by Charles Meunier; one of the 10 first copies on Japon, including 4 states of the illustrations by Besnard and 3 states of the frontispiece on Japon, and enriched with a portrait of the author engraved by Adrien Nargeot and a L.A.S. from the illustrator to Charles Meunier. Paris, Bibliothèque Artistique, 1885. In-4 (180x265 mm), duck blue morocco, spine with 4 false-nerves framed with cold filets extending over the boards, mosaic decoration composed of leaves and fruit in brown, havana and green morocco on the first board, decoration in the same style in the centre of the spine and second board, lining entirely in mosaic, decorated with a network of lozenges drawn with gilt fillet and interspersed with a rosette of red morocco on a gilt background, Each lozenge decorated alternately with a daisy in ochre and brown morocco on a beige background and a lotus flower in violet, brown and green morocco on a grey and havana background, all within a wide frame consisting of three listels in beige, brown and havana morocco, bordered by a bold gilt fillet on the inside and cold fillet on the inside, the outer listel signed "Ch. Meunier 1901" in the leather, blue moiré silk endpapers, double endpapers, gilt edges on witnesses, covers preserved, edged slipcase (Charles Meunier, 1901). IV and 327 pages, 1 frontispiece portrait of the author engraved by Champollion after Gérard and 10 hors-texte plates engraved by Ricardo de Los-Rios after Paul Albert Besnard. Spine slightly faded, minimal rubbing to the nerves, a scratch on the second plate, rare and minimal foxing. The pure etching following plate 7 is missing. Charming edition published in the Bibliothèque moderne collection, illustrated with a portrait of the author engraved by Champollion after Gérard and 10 out-of-text figures engraved by Ricardo de Los-Rios (1846-1929) after compositions by Albert Besnard. Limited edition of 210 copies, this being one of the 10 first copies on Japon à la forme paper, including 4 states of the engravings on Japon (pure etching, avant la lettre with remarks, avant la lettre and final state) and 3 states of the frontispiece (avant la lettre with remarks, avant la lettre and final state). A precious copy enriched with a portrait of the author on Japon by Adrien Nargeot and a small autograph letter from Besnard to Charles Meunier, dated 27 September 1899. Sumptuous binding by Charles Meunier in doubled and mosaic morocco in the Art Nouveau style of the period.
