An exceptional bookbinder, Charles Meunier (1866-1948) left his mark on the history of French bookbinding with a prolific and instantly recognisable body of work combining technical virtuosity and decorative experimentation. A pupil of Girodet and Gros who worked in the workshops of Marius Michel before founding his own firm, he was also a publisher, theorist and polemicist, signing emblematic bindings - notably for Les Fleurs du Mal illustrated by Schwabe and the Works of Victor Hugo - that today rank among the pinnacles of the art of bookbinding.
A very fine copy.
