Description
[TAUROMACHY - SPAIN] - MOREAU (Adrien) - GAUTIER (Théophile). Militona. Drawing and proofs. A precious album by Léon Conquet containing a pen-and-ink drawing by Adrien Moreau and 83 annotated proofs, enabling us to follow the engraver's creative process step by step from the first state to the "ready for press" state. This exceptional set is completed by six autograph letters signed by Adrien Moreau, Charpentier and Arcos, and several documents and prints related to the edition. [Paris, Conquet, 1887]. In-folio (375 x 293 mm), Bradel style in coral half-maroquin with corners, smooth spine, title in gilt. (Binding attributable to Carayon). 84 plates b.w. of engravings and drawings; 6 plates of LAS, 12 plates of proofs of covers, titles, etc. (binding attributable to Carayon). Spine a little shaded, some spotting on boards. Unique copy established by the publisher and great bibliophile Léon Conquet in the margin of the illustrated edition of Militona by Zola by Adrien Moreau (1843-1906). Spanish and bullfighting novel by Théophile Gautier (1847), evoking the love of Andrès for Militona, the modest worker jealously guarded by Juancho the bullfighter. A very fine copy of this exceptional work.
