FRANCE (Anatole) and LEBÈGUE (Léon). Histoire de doña Maria d'Avalos et de don Fabricio, duc d'Andria. Handwritten and illuminated by Léon Lebègue. Luxurious edition, entirely ruled, calligraphed and illuminated with 38 colour compositions by Léon Lebègue; one of the 15 first copies on Japon (N°10), including an original signed watercolour by Léon Lebègue and two suites on Chine, in a pleasant Jansenist binding signed by Charles Meunier. Paris, Librairie des Bibliophiles, 1902. In-4 (200x270 mm), havana jansenist morocco, spine with 4 false-nerves framed in cold, gold lettering to the entrenerfs, double gilt fillet on the edges, wide inner band in the same morocco decorated with a cold fillet, the name of the bookbinder and purple mosaic morocco listels surrounded by gilt fillets and edged with stamped and mosaic rings, purple moiré silk lining and endpapers, multicoloured double endpapers, gilt edges on witnesses, illustrated covers preserved (Charles Meunier). XXXIV pages, 38 colour compositions by Léon Lebègue, ornate and gold-enhanced lettering with red initials. Minor rubbing to second cover. First deluxe edition of this tale from "Le Puits de Saint Claire", fully set, calligraphed and illuminated with 38 compositions by the painter and illustrator Léon Lebègue (1863-1930), including 2 on the cover. Limited edition of 240 copies, this being one of the 15 first copies on Japon (N°10), with an original signed watercolour by Lebègue, a two-colour suite and a black suite on China paper. Complete with the cover engraved by Ducourtioux. A remarkable copy, well established by Charles Meunier (1865-1948).
