Pierre Mouriau de Meulenacker (1932-2025) was one of the leading figures of Belgian bibliophiles of the last century, specialising in 18th-century French literature. A member of the "Société royale des bibliophiles et des iconophiles de Belgique", he was also the founder of the "Groupe d'études lignistes" and a specialist in eighteenth-century publishing. He himself published numerous studies, notably on typographical ornamentation, and donated several of his collections to public institutions: the collection relating to the Prince de Ligne was bequeathed to the Moretus Plantin University Library, and the collection relating to Madame de Graffigny was bequeathed to the Chateau of Lunéville. This is his "Mahogany and Zirphile" collection.
Notes on "Mahogany and Zirphile": In 1740, Count Carl Gustaf de Tessin, the Swedish ambassador to France, wrote a rather insipid fairy tale for which he commissioned illustrations from François Boucher. Charles Pinot Duclos competed with Caylus, Voisenon and Surgères to write a short story inspired by these ten drawings. His story "Acajou et Zirphile" was judged the best and published with the engravings in 1744, inspiring Charles-Simon Favart that same year to write a comic opera that was destined for great success. Numerous anonymous editions of this tale were published in Paris, London and Geneva; Pierre Mouriau attempted to collect as many as possible and produced the above-mentioned bibliography.
Attached to the author's personal copy of this bibliography are 17 works used in its preparation:
