UZANNE (Octave). Modern, artistic and fanciful bookbinding. A remarkable copy of this bibliophilic study by Octave Uzanne, in a splendid mosaic binding by Georg Collin. Paris, Edouard Rouveyre, 1887. Small in-4 (180x260 mm), light brown morocco, cold-framed ribbed spine, triple framed with gilt corner irons to the entrenerfs, first cover decorated with a rich gilt and mosaic decoration in colour, depicting beautiful bindings placed on a pedestal and accompanied by a bamboo stem, triple and double gilt fillet framing the second plate, inside band of the same brown morocco set with a decoration of full and dotted fillets, friezes and gilt corner irons, embroidered silk lining and endpapers with gold, red and light blue floral decoration, in a lined slipcase (Georg Collin). 263 pages, 2 ff.n.ch. (table, printer's proof) and VIII (Index of plates), 1 engraved frontispiece by Manesse after Albert Lynch, 72 plates of photographic reproductions in one tone under captioned serpents, allegorical drawings by J. Adeline, G. Fraipont and A. Giraldon in headpieces and lettering. Bite fragile on the first cover (split over 17 cm), rubbing to the edges and nerves, slight scratches to the second cover. A fascinating bibliophilic study of modern bookbinding by Octave Uzanne, decorated with a frontispiece engraved by Manesse after Albert Lynch, 72 plates showing beautiful bindings reproduced after the originals by Albert Dujardin, and several allegorical drawings by J. Adeline, G. Fraipont and A. Giraldon. Limited edition of 500 numbered copies on Vellum (N°69). Two bookplates on the first white endpaper: that of Margarete Litten and that of Cornelius J. Hauck, a major American collector whose library was sold by Christie's in 2006. An admirable copy, produced in Berlin by Georg Collin, son of the bookbinder Wilhelm Collin and last "royal bookbinder" to the German emperor.
