Historian, chronicler and future administrator of the Comédie-Française, Jules Claretie (1840-1913) was a central figure in Parisian literary life. "Des vers" is Guy de Maupassant's third book and his only collection of poetry. Dedicated to Flaubert, it contains 19 long poems in verse, including "Au bord de l'eau", for which the author was prosecuted by the Etampes court for offences against public morals.
The volume ends with a reprint of the comedy "Histoire du vieux temps", dedicated to Caroline Commanville (Flaubert's niece) and originally published by Tresse in 1879.
A fine copy, fresh and clean, perfectly established by Gruel.
