Description
MONNIER (Henry). Les Petites Félicités humaines. Small human miseries. Rare and beautiful suite of 10 lithographs by Henry Monnier, watercoloured and gummed in colour. Paris, Delpech, (circa 1829). In-4 oblong (355x270mm), 2ff.v. - 1c. - 10pl. - 2ff.v.; half dark green chagrin with corners, 5 ribbed spine, typographical cover preserved. Upper spine epidermised (re-tinted) and split at foot over 5cm, corners dulled (re-tinted), freckles. The series is divided into two parts of 5 lithographs each - Les Petites Félicités / Les Petites Misères - nicely titled in the same way: "Childhood", "Youth", "Mature Age", "Old Age" & "Heat" (now "Cold" for the miseries) but captioned differently. Halfway between an artist's drawing and a newspaper caricature, the author describes the joys and sorrows of each of these stages of life with charming delicacy and humour. The copy held by the BNF is in black. Unidentified bookplate ("Un autre monde").
