An important work on the Duchy of Milan, illustrated with engraved maps and plans enhanced in colour. Milan, Agnelli Scultore, 1707. In quarto (280x215mm). Tan basane, spine ribbed. [46] leaves (including copper-engraved plans), 1 map and 1 folding plan. Leather faded on spine, gilt faded. Waxing to boards, split at bottom of spine, slightly damaged edges. Smudging in the inner margin of the last two plates. First edition, dedicated to Prince Eugène of Savoy. The very fine illustration consists of two folding plates, a map of the Duchy of Milan and a plan of the fortress of Milan, and 22 copper-engraved plans accompanied by a detailed description set in an attractive baroque frame, also engraved on copper. The title page is adorned with a vignette bearing the motto "UMBRA ET LUMINE" ("Shadow and Light"). It includes maps of Milan, Pavia, Tortona, Serravalle, Alessandria, Valenza, Mortara, Novara, Arona, Domodossola, Como, Lecco, Trezzo, the Fort of Fuentes, Vigevano, Bobbio, Lodi, Pizzighettone, Cremona, Sabbioneta, Marina di Finale and Govone. The author was Giovanni Battista Sesti, a lieutenant-general and military engineer. The work was republished several times during the 18th century, notably in 1711, 1718 and 1733. Rare first edition with hand-coloured highlights from the period.
