Description
CARRÉ (Léon) - BARRUCAND (Victor). The Terracotta Chariot. Based on the Indian play attributed to King Soudraka. Léon Carré's orientalist masterpiece, magnified by a superb mosaic binding by Charles Lanoë. Paris, L'Édition d'Art H. Piazza, 1921. In-4 (300 x 240 mm). Full dark morocco, boards and spine decorated with rich oriental-style mosaic compositions in polychrome leather, underlined by black and gilt fillets; four-ribbed spine, gilt edges on witnesses, moiré silk inside covers and endpapers. Bordered slipcase. Binding signed Charles Lanoë. 114 pp, 2 ff. n. ch. Excellent state of conservation in spite of a slight insolation on the spine. One of the most beautiful books illustrated by the Orientalist painter Léon Carré. The illustrations consist of 20 gouaches reproduced with stencils, hors-texte and under captioned serpents. Each page is richly framed with friezes and typographical ornaments in colour, inspired by Buddhist paintings in the temples of ancient India. Limited edition of 910 copies. This is one of 750 on vellum from the Blanchet Frères and Kléber manufactures (No. 304). Attached is the original handwritten invoice by bookbinder Charles Lanoë, dated 1923, for the execution of this binding (document tired). A superb copy.
