PETITJEAN (Charles) & WICKERT (Charles). Catalogue of the engraved works of Robert Nanteuil. Bibliographical note by François Courboin.
The catalogue raisonné of the great portrait painter and engraver of the seventeenth century. A copy of the bibliophile and print collector André Barrier, enriched with 4 original pieces by Nanteuil (1623-1678), one of which is "unknown".
Paris, Loys Delteil, Expert and Maurice Le Garrec, Libraire-Editeur, 1925.
Two volumes in-4 (294 x 230 mm), green half-maroquin with corners, spine ribbed with gilt lettering, gilt head. Binding signed "Canape et Corriez".
Frontispiece, 411pp, 16 plates; 4 pages, 234 plates.
Spine a little faded.
First edition, illustrated with 17 and 234 plates. Limited edition of 750 copies on Lafuma vellum.
A choice copy, drawn up by André Barrier, who has included original pieces, including the portrait of Nanteuil engraved by Edelinck and three engravings signed "Nanteuil", one of which is accompanied by the handwritten note "seems to have remained unknown".
The work contains several handwritten annotations in the margins in Barrier's hand, as well as a long final note in which he states: "In 1929, I donated all the portraits of magistrates in my collection to the Tribunal de la Seine".
André Barrier (Paris, 1870-1957), a great bibliophile and collector of prints, was president of the Paris Court of Appeal and president of the Cent Bibliophiles. His fine etched bookplate appears on the first flyleaf.
A very fine copy, elegantly bound by Canape and Corriez.
