Description
STALL (Joseph). La Fleur des cent nouvelles decorated with 45 burin-engraved compositions by Stall. Preface by Jean-Jacques Brousson.
A fine first copy on old Japon (N°3) of this charming edition illustrated in the first edition by Joseph Stall, containing two suites of illustrations in colour, one refused plate and 46 artist's proofs in black.

In-4 (210x260 mm), paperback, flap cover illustrated with a coloured etching, red half-chagrin folder, edged slipcase.
XIV and 185 pages, 45 colour compositions by Stall engraved in intaglio (drypoint and aquatint), of which 9 full-page, 15 at the head, 12 in-text and 9 at the foot, some typographical ornaments in monochrome (headbands, initials in red and footnotes).
Minor rubbing to dust jacket and slight wear to slipcase. Very rare and pale freckles on the first few leaves.
First edition and first print run of 45 saucy compositions by Joseph Stall, pseudonym of André Lapuszewoki (1874-1933). Commissioned by Philippe le Bon, Duke of Burgundy, who dedicated it and received it in 1462, this anthology of 100 freely inspired short stories is the very first collection of modern tales in French.
Limited edition of 220 copies, this being one of the 5 first copies on Japon ancien à la forme (N°3), containing a first state suite of 15 coloured plates accompanied by a refused plate under passe-partout, signed by the artist, a second state suite of 45 illustrations, all signed by the artist, and a suite of 46 artist's proofs in black, some with remarks.
