Description
ARNOUX (Guy) & MAINDRON (Maurice). St-Cendre.
First copy; one of 3 numbered on old japon, each containing a third of Arnoux's original watercolours, here 14.
Paris, Mornay, 1930.
In-8 square (220x175mm), full red grosgrain morocco, boards and spine decorated with a continuous pattern of gilt fillets and featuring a modern hinge, 412 pp.
Spine faded, spinebands worn, covers preserved (Lucie Edgar-Faure).
The work recounts the adventures of the Marquis de Saint-Cendre, left for dead in a ditch in the summer of 1569 at the height of the Wars of Religion; the reconquest of his fortune and the wife who had betrayed him, who had taken refuge in the impregnable citadel of Haute-Ganne...
Critics have praised the erudition with which Maurice Maindron depicts this turbulent period, although he is better known for his work as an entomologist and naturalist (several thousand of his entries can be found in the Larousse and the Grand dictionnaire universel du XIXe siècle). Richly illustrated with in-text figures.
Niece of Julien Cain, general administrator of the Bibliothèque nationale de France from 1930 to 1964, Lucie Faure (née Meyer) was a pre-war bookbinder of international renown. She took part in numerous salons for decorative artists abroad, married Edgar Faure in 1931 and was also a woman of letters.
